Dog Friendly Portsmouth: Your Complete Guide to Visiting with Your Dog

Dog Friendly Portsmouth: Your Complete Guide to Visiting with Your Dog

Portsmouth is one of the most dog-welcoming cities on the south coast. With miles of seafront to walk, dozens of dog-friendly cafes and pubs, and easy access to open countryside and the Isle of Wight, it’s a brilliant destination for dog owners looking for a short break or holiday.

All of our holiday apartments at St Helen’s House are dog-friendly, which means you don’t have to leave your four-legged family member at home. Here’s everything you need to know about visiting Portsmouth with a dog.

Dog-Friendly Beaches in Portsmouth

Southsea Beach is dog-friendly throughout the year in certain sections, and from October to April dogs are welcome across the full stretch of the beach. The seafront promenade is open to dogs all year round and is perfect for a long morning walk with sea views. Eastney Beach, at the quieter eastern end of the seafront, tends to be less busy and is a popular spot with local dog walkers.

If you’re happy to drive a short distance, Hayling Island has long stretches of beach that are very dog-friendly, and Chichester Harbour offers beautiful waterside walks that dogs love.

Dog-Friendly Cafes and Coffee Shops

Southsea has a wonderful independent café culture and many of the best spots actively welcome dogs. Some highlights:

  • The Hideaway Southsea — possibly the most dog-themed café in Portsmouth, with a dedicated dog menu, grooming salon and photography studio. An absolute must for dog lovers.

  • Southsea Coffee Co — a beloved independent coffee roaster in the heart of Southsea, warmly welcoming to four-legged visitors.

  • Café Fresco at Canoe Lake — a lovely spot right on the lake, ideal for a post-walk coffee and cake with your dog beside you.

  • By the Beach — a relaxed seafront café with great food and a dog-friendly welcome.

  • Southsea Beach Cafe — right on the seafront, dog-friendly and with excellent sea views.

Dog-Friendly Pubs and Restaurants

You won’t struggle to find a dog-welcoming pub in Southsea. Some of the best include:

  • Porters on Albert Road — a Southsea favourite known for generous portions and a genuine welcome for dogs.

  • The Wine Vaults on Albert Road — an excellent range of ales and wines, frequently populated by a good variety of dogs as well as their owners.

  • The Florence Arms — a well-loved local pub offering craft ales, fine wines and traditional cocktails in a dog-friendly setting.

  • The Eastney Tavern — dogs welcome in certain areas, a classic neighbourhood pub close to the eastern end of the seafront.

  • The Still & West in Old Portsmouth — a waterside pub right on the harbour entrance, perfect for watching the ferries with a pint and your dog at your feet.

Dog-Friendly Walks in and Around Portsmouth

The four-mile Southsea seafront promenade is the obvious starting point — flat, easy, and with the sea on one side the whole way. From our apartments on Eastern Villas Road you can be on the promenade in minutes.

Canoe Lake park is wonderful for a morning walk, with the lake, rose garden and open grass all within a short circuit. Milton Lake, a little further east, is quieter and popular with local dog walkers.

For longer walks, Portsdown Hill (home to Fort Nelson) offers sweeping views and good trails, and the South Downs National Park is less than 30 minutes’ drive away with exceptional walking country.

Don’t overlook a day trip to the Isle of Wight either — the hovercraft from Clarence Esplanade accepts small dogs on leads, and the island has some outstanding coastal walks.
